Christine Gaddis Obituary

 

Mrs. Christine Mitchell Gaddis was born on July 14, 1930, to the late Lonnie Mitchell and Lela Swain Mitchell in Talladega, Alabama. 

She was educated in the Talladega County School System.  After many years of faithful service, she retired from Drew Middle School. Because of the love for her job, she continued working for several schools within the Talladega County School System.

Mrs. Gaddis was a longtime member of Sycamore Missionary Baptist Church where she served devotedly with a spirit of love and humility in the following ministries: Matrons Ministry, Deaconess Ministry, Missionary and Education Auxiliary, and Hospitality Committee. She organized the junior choir in 1960 and served as the president from 1960 to 1987. She was awarded a plague for her distinguished service.  She was also the Coordinator and Vice President of the Pastor’s Aid Committee from 1986 to 2007. She was a member of the senior usher board for over 60 years where she served as Vice President. She was Vice President of the missionary society from1960-1990. Christine also served as a Vacation Bible Schoolteacher, Junior Class Sunday School Teacher, Treasurer of the Missionary Society, Ward leader of Club No. 3, Chairman of the flashlight committee (human relations), and a messenger of the Rushing Springs District Congress of Christian Education for numerous years. She was the Mother of the church and was affectionally called “Mama Chris” in the church and in the community.

Christine Gaddis, “Mulla” was united in holy matrimony to Isiah Gaddis Sr. on October 12, 1950. To this union, eight children were born.  

On the morning of July 20th, Mulla departed this life surrounded by her family.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Isiah Gaddis Sr., her eldest daughter, Gwendolyn Gaddis Cannon, her son in love, Rev. Stephen Groce, sisters; Elma Lawrence, Lonnie Christian and Olivia Patterson; Brothers, Ernest Mitchell and Lloyd Mitchell. She leaves to cherish her memories her “girls” Doris James (Willie) of Newnan, GA, Vanessa Groceof Lincoln, AL; Loretta King (Roger) of Loganville, GA; Minister Angelina Fomby (Minister Marc) of Byram, MS; Quinthlia Hameen Collins (David) of Birmingham, AL. Her “boys” Isiah Gaddis Jr. (Tandra) of Talladega, AL and Chief Michael Gaddis (Janice) of Hampton, GA.One sister, Juanita Owens of Cleveland, OH; two brothers Cary Mitchell and Bobby Terry of Talladega, AL; One sister-in-law, Bertha Draper of Detroit, MI; Twenty-two grandchildren; Thirty-nine great-grandchildren and Six great great-grandchildren; Goddaughter, Terrica Feaster; A special son, Kenny Garrett (Sandra) and two special daughters Kathleen Watkins and Deborah Brown (Curtis); Special friends, Brenda Jackson, Sarah Kidd and Valerie Stockdale, and a host of other family members and friends.
