Dr. Herman Andre Tolbert, 72, died January 1, 2021 of COVID related pneumonia. He was born to John and Ruth Tolbert and was preceded in death by both parents, and a sister, Gloria T. Shelby. Herman had a kind, generous spirit that will be missed. He was educated in the Birmingham Public school system and went on to graduate from Stillman College, in addition to the University of California San Diego Medical School. Residency training was completed at Ohio State Hospital. He remained at Ohio State University for a long, successful career as a child psychiatrist and faculty member of the OSU medical school. After retirement from OSU, he took a position as medical director at Ohio State hospital for psychiatry and worked for several more years until his second retirement. Herman returned to Alabama in 2018 for his final years and greatest challenge, Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Tolbert is survived by a sister, Brenda T. Kidd (Lawrence) ; niece Andrea Marable ; nephew John Marable (Tamesha). Fond memories remain with a host of other relatives, friends, and former colleagues.
