Preston Williams, Sr. was born on October 23, 1926 in Linden, Alabama
to Britton and Classie Williams. Preston was the fourth of nine children
born to this union. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized
at St. Peters Baptist Church in Linden, Alabama. After moving to
Birmingham, Alabama, he later joined New St. James Missionary Baptist
Church under the pastorate of late Reverend L. Clyde Fisher, and
continued to serve under Reverend Larry Woodruff and current Pastor
Daryl L. Warren where he served faithfully for over 50 years.
On May 28, 1949, Preston Williams was joined in holy matrimony to the
late Gertrude Rand. To this union, five sons, Mose, Preston Jr., Chester,
and Reginald, and three daughters Lucy, Barbara, and Kimberly were
born.
Deacon Preston Williams, Sr., was a faithful member of New Saint James
and a diligent worker in the church. He served as Chairman for the
Board of Deacons, Sunday School Teacher-Kingdom Builders Class,
Member of Laymen’s Division-Mt. Pilgrim District, member of the
Senior Choir, Co-Chairman Dedication Ceremony of The Education
Building (1974), Sunday School Assistant Superintendent (1988),
Nursing Home Outreach Ministry, former Chairman and member of the
Finance Committee. He continued to serve faithfully, under the
leadership of Pastor Daryl L. Warren, until his health failed him.
After his honorable discharge with the United States Army, Preston was
employed with Brice Building Company and retired with 42 years of
dedicated service. With his excellent work ethic, he continued to work 5
more years as a security guard for AmSouth Regional Plaza.
